Guest DJ: Ash from Behind the Lens

First visit to Music Savvy Mom? Awesome! Go HERE quick to get caught up.

One of our mutual friends described Ash as the MOST chill person you could ever meet.

Well, yeah, she is – when she’s not flying by the seat of her pants into some wild Live Music/Concert Adventure/Road Trip that invariably ends up in some city she did not initially intend to visit. Then…she’s positively electric.

Show of hands – who remembers Almost Famous? (If you haven’t ALL raised your hands, stop reading RIGHT NOW and rent the movie. We’ll wait.) If Penny Lane and William Miller had a kid – that kid would be Ash. She digs music…she is the world’s best Band-Aid, and she’s got the video to prove it.

Not THAT kind of video – unwad your grannies. sheese.

By weekday, she has a powerful job at a Major Institution of Higher Education…by night, she has a business videotaping hot new bands. And, she’s damn good at it. Her blog, Behind the Lens, is going to be giving us more “behind the scenes of the behind the scenes” and trust me…as an actual “real life friend” of hers who has been at/heard about some of the scenes, I can unequivocally tell you that it’s gonna be GOOD. (Edited to add *eyebrow waggle* for proper emphasis. ~ Ri)

She’s just started blogging, so you should really just read the whole thing and get caught up, then plan to stick around and follow the “tour”…lol. Where else you gonna get backstage passes and front row seats from the comfort of your living room?

So I’m not a mom, and don’t necessarily plan to be…but I am one hell of a “bad influence non-related aunt” to a lot of friends’ kids… lol
And my bands are like kids, sometimes…
Oh and I went to 11. Because, well, I go to 11…that is just the way it is.
The Ash Shuffle:
1. The LightCommon ~
“You know I ain’t the type to walk around in matching shirts…” This is easily one of my favorite “love songs”. It encompasses a few different kinds of love. From the moment I heard it years ago (in college), I knew that this one meshed with a deep rooted philosophy of love. Common hits the nail on the head with his rhymes, he isn’t trying to say anything different than exactly what he is saying….and I find that very refreshing in a love song.
2. I Will SurviveGloria Gaynor ~
Can’t get much more classic than this. The amount of disco in my collection is a little alarming, actually. But I was born in the 70s…
3. Welcome to the JungleGuns N’ Roses ~
One of my favorite albums ever. One of my favorite bands ever. And one of the best songs to blast out the windows ever. And Slash is a guitar god, plain and simple.
4. Personal JesusDepeche Mode ~
I have a thing for hard, pulsing beats in songs. This song fits that bill nicely. I missed the boat a little on Depeche Mode, but thankfully music doesn’t discriminate against age and will play for anyone.
5. Naked in the RainRHCP ~
My favorite band. I have a whole other kind of love for the Chili Peppers. This one is from Blood Sugar Sex Magic, which is an album full of funk and circumstance. And I love it. Not my favorite song, not my favorite album, but this is the song that came up for RHCP. I was wondering which one it would be.
6. Common ReactorSilversun Pickups ~
My favorite new discovery. This is from their album Carnavas, their follow up album, Swoon, is like an extra organ for me. Remember what I was saying about a hard, pulsing rhythm section? This band has that down.
7. Ms. JacksonOutkast ~
Something about this is very ,very appropriate for this shuffle. I think my future involves baby mamas in some way, shape or form. LOL! No, but really, I love Outkast. Great lyrics, great stories, and they are not afraid to try different things and mix genres up a bit. I like artists who are brave, and I feel like Outkast is a very brave band.
8. Sexy BackJustin Timberlake & Timbaland ~
This one is just fun. I have some great memories of this one, but once again…the beat is an emphasis…Timbaland (good ol’ VA boy!) is a master of a great beat. And Justin Timberlake, post N’Sync is easily one of my favorite solo male artists. He is a throwback in a very fresh way. I have all of his albums and definitely listen to him often.
9. A Little Bit MoreJamie Lidell ~
What was a I saying about beat? And soul? And lyrics? Goodness, there is a some weird consistency in this shuffle. Jamie IS my favorite, current male artist. This is the song that was in Target commercials for a while a few years ago. Thank you, Target, because I have been hooked ever since. His latest album, Jim, is fantastic. The song All I Wanna Do is one of those love songs that I vibe with…check it out, you will not be disappointed.
10. Rock Around the ClockBill Haley and His Comets ~
So, I have a lot of oldies in my iTunes. I love that this one came up. I totally Rock Around the Clock. I have memories of doing childhood “dance” routines to this with my neighborhood friends. Poodle skirts, the twist, simplicity….this song is just fun.
11. Be My BabyThe Ronettes ~
Its a generational thing – I think of the open credits to Dirty Dancing when I hear this song. And knowing that movie was filmed 20 minutes from where I grew up…well, that makes my heart smile. But aside from the soundtrack, this is one of my favorite “oldies”. I bet you can figure out why…something about a beat, right? And this is just a great girly song.
