I’ve known Tiffani from Rock ‘n Write for oh…about a year and a half now. Followed her blogs, read her published articles, been on a forum with her, rocked out with her at a concert and even embarrassed her by picking up a couple of North Dakotans in an Irish Pub. (It’s true. I have photos.)
I mention all this to illustrate that I know whereof I speak when I tell you that she is one of the most detailed, accurate and effective professional writers I know. She is a tirelessly dedicated volunteer and champion for Cochlear Implant Awareness. She is a WAY cool Mom. She is a squeeing fangirl. She is a rocker. She has a Southern drawl sweeter than jasmine and can be a total tomboy. She’s a loyal, caring friend. And I swear she didn’t pay me a cent to say ANY of that.
When it came to paring down the posts to highlight…well, I had a rough time. So, get yourself some brewed Sweet Tea and settle in. Go poke around Rock ‘n Write here, and here, and here, and here. Then come thank me. I won’t even say “I told you so”… 😉
Broken by You – Jordan Knight
This is on his self-titled solo album sometime in the mid- to late 1990s. Despite the boy band stigma, JK can sing. Still. And, yes, I saw New Kids on the Block on their fall tour. And, yes, I still love them, like OMG, Donnie’s so hot! And Jordan looked at me! And Danny’s so fine! OK, kidding. Sort of. And moving on …
Easy – The Commodores
I’m a Southern girl with soul – that explains my love for The Commodores.
Someday – Mariah Carey
This goes out to all the boys who never returned my like/love in high school and college.
Devil With a Blue Dress – Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels
True story: Senior year in high school, I wore a form-fitting blue dress with gold buttons up the front for school picture day. A friend who was a junior told all the boys he’d like to bite the buttons off my blue dress. Yeah, great line, right? Ha! I’ve always liked the song, though.
Headed for a Heartbreak – Winger
Ahh, Kip Winger and his slick ballet moves. I love ’80s hair bands. Always will. Plus, the video for “Miles Away” stars a guy who looks like someone I once dated. My heart skipped a beat the first time I saw it … then I looked closer and I realized the guy, who is an actor now, was miles away from that video shoot.
Where No One Stands Alone – Elvis
I love his rock ‘n’ roll, but it’s his gospel that touches my heart. He wasn’t perfect, but I believe he meant every word he sang. And listening reminds me of my momma playing his tapes every Sunday morning while we got ready for church.
(Couldn’t get WNOSA, so substituted Amazing Grace.)
I Walk the Line – Johnny Cash
My daddy introduced me to The Man in Black. My daddy introduced me to Merle Haggard. And Marty Robbins. And Don Williams. And I thank him for that. That’s some good music. It will always remind me of my daddy.
Bring It On Home to Me – Sam Cooke
Sweet soul. Smooth. Sam put the emotion in all his songs, from “A Change is Gonna Come” to “Havin’ a Party” to this one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Don’t Cry – Guns ‘N’ Roses
Dude, I miss the original lineup. The new GNR just ain’t what it used to be, and Velvet Revolver can’t pull it off, either. Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy, Steven, why couldn’t you just get along and lay off the drugs? I love this song.
Last Goodbye – Jeff Buckley
A friend introduced me to Jeff two years ago. I’d heard his “Hallelujah,” but she pointed me to this one and the line “Kiss me out of desire, baby, not consolation.” Lovely. What a voice.
