Guest DJ: Single Mom Survives

No way around it – divorce sucks.  This, I can tell you from experience.  But divorce when you have a child or children must bring with it levels of stress that cannot be even adequately, let alone accurately, imagined by those of us who haven’t experienced it.  Single parents get bucketloads of praise and respect from me.

The ones who handle the stress with  humor, honesty and an occasional frequent,  necessary, vitriolic yet empowering rants get EXTRA points.

Enter “Single Mom Survives“.  She opens up a window to her world to us, but if you’re expecting to peek in and see a wilting violet weeping into an embroidered hankie, you’re gonna be disappointed.  This chick kicks ass with steel toed boots, yo.  And, Lord forgive me – her rants are HYSTERICAL.  (See HERE and HERE for proof.) She’s raising her four year old munchkin in a difficult circumstance with a smile on her face and a ramrod in her back.

SMS may think that her blog is mainly a vehicle of release for her own emotions, but I suspect that she’s expressing feelings, reactions and fears that many of her readers choke back daily.  When a writer can give a voice and a face to the unheard or unseen…that is a beautiful gift, indeed.

Rock on, SMS, with your shuffle of win! 😉

1. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters – Elton John (I don’t care how big a diva he is Elton John is the shit)

2. Son of a Preacher Man – Aretha Franklin (I mean hello, it’s Aretha. She’s a Diva in the best way. She can wear as many crazy ass hats as she wants with that voice. There’s nothing like old school Aretha.)

3. Love and Happiness – Al Green (Motown puts me in my happy place. I have an odd crush on Motown) 4. For What It’s Worth – Buffalo Springfield (This song proves the more times change, the more they stay the same. This song could be an anthem today just as it was in it’s day.)

5. Over My Head – The Fray (we have all lived this song at some point in our life, painfully beautiful) 6. She’s Always a Woman – Billy Joel (I don’t care how old Billy Joel is I would totally do him. He is one of the greats. I wish I were his piano.)

7. The First Cut Is the Deepest – Sheryl Crow (I adore and admire Sheryl Crow. This song makes my gut turn in into knots but it makes me feel and that is the biggest compliment I can give a song.)

8. Hey There Delilah – Plain White T’s (I don’t know who this Delilah is but she’s one lucky broad. I wish I were her. I also love that this song came up because it’s my 4 year old daughters favorite song and she knows all the words.)

9. Ain’t Misbehavin’ – Louis Armstrong (This song just makes me happy. It makes me think of a more innocent and simple time. It also makes me feel like I must have the soul of a grandnma.)

10. Proud Mary – Tina Turner (a goddess, no one does it better than Ms. Turner and that’s a fact jack. Just listening to old school Tina Turner makes me feel stronger. It also makes me want to beat the shit out of Ike Turner even though he already passed away.)

Soul – that’s what I’m talkin’ about. I love soul music. It just gets to you and makes you move, whether it’s the head bob or the booty shake.

    Sweet list!
