Friday Fiver: Volume 5

Y’know, it dawned on me that I don’t have to make ALL of the songs brand spanking new releases.

I mean, seriously – if all of you are right on top of the moment to moment goings on in the Music Scene, then I’m going to have to question the cleanliness of your house, your level of on-the-job productivity and the amount of food in your ‘fridge that has passed it’s prime. This “being hip” takes SO MUCH TIME – holy cheeses – I swear I don’t know how any college students actually make it to class anymore. It’s like a job!

But, I digress. It’s just that I may throw in some tunes that have been out a while but that maybe I just discovered. (Because I’m so un-hip, I’m practically a knee. Just sayin’…)

Or, it could be a song that I love and just want you to hear. Ahhhhh, it’s good to be Queen! 😉

Moving right along…ahem:

    1. I freakin’ love this song. I repeated it several times. Has a Donovan crossed with Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows” sound but still nice and modern. This song should be sprinkled liberally all over my day.

    2. Wow. Another great song. Love the jangly guitar, love it.

    3. This one is a little too … introspective, maybe? … for my taste. Not bad, very listenable and interesting, but not something I would buy.

    4. Love the guitar. Has a country-rock quality that I can’t quite put my finger on.

    5. Meh. I could take or leave this one. I’m going back to the first one …

1- Like this one all the way through. Vocals at times reminded me of Ziggy-era Bowie, at times of early Joe Jackson. Quick, fun, a winner!

2- Nice enough, not really my thing. Rhythm guitar was a little frantic and made me nervous.

3- Intro sorta Kid-A Radioheadish. Breathy affectation to voice is annoying. Trying to listen to the music (which I like) without focusing too much on on affected hipster vocals. I think this is the guy with the soul patch who works at my local Starbucks.

4- Vocals threw me, not was I was expecting after the intro. Pleasant but formulaic, sounds like something Clive Davis would put together for the next American Idol winner. Sounds like layers upon layers created in studio. Solo w/1:00 remaining completely out of place. Product.

5- Odd – Don’t know if I like the individual components of the song but I like how they all work together. Reminds me of a time I was in an outdoor aviary and it started to rain when I was a kid. Stupid: Drums made me think of Larry Mullen’s tone on the War album, esp. “Like a Song”. Wow, actually went back and listened a second time, like it that much. I need to buy this.
