Friday Fiver – Quirky Covers

Johnny Five

Well…THIS week has just blown by me like a hurricane – good Lord, is it Friday already? I have been busier than a one armed wallpaper hanger, I swear.  I’ve gotta level with y’all – I JUST realized I needed to put a Fiver up ten minutes ago.  It’s 12:42 am right now…

*SPOILER ALERT*

There’s not gonna be any brand spankin’ new music this week.  Ri didn’t do her homework.  It’s like 8th grade Pre-Algebra in Mr. Burlemachi’s class all over again…gotta wing it on the fly. *sigh*

Incidentally, I don’t have a Southern accent when I talk – evidently just when I type.  Go figure.

Tonight I feel the need for “comfort music” – the tried and true.  But, just to make it interesting…I think I’ll run through my iTunes and pull out some covers.  Some will be – um – “unexpected”. 😉  Enjoy, and if you know the original, let us know in the comments how you think the cover measures up.  On Sunday, I’ll post the originals, too.

    I loved this, Ri!!!

#1 improved on the original to my ears (though the original conjures up memories for my younger years haha)
#2 you know I love… we’ve discussed this before (I think I’ll go make some chocolate milk, stirring with a waterfall)
#3 This cover was just as good as the original… I think I could make a CD of this song done by different bands and musicians and not get tired of it. (Will find our friends’ old band’s cover for you) The acoustic is perfect for my morning
#4 I really liked this (but when I play it in my head… I just get Lou Reed) Psyched to see who this is though!!!
#5 I can appreciate this cover but it’s too early for it, too fast (It’s 6:15 and I’ve not had my coffee) WIll play it again later!

    Very fun! Thanks Ri

    I love this Fiver.

#1 is awesome. I love that song and this version was just a lot of fun.

and #5 is by one of my favorite “party bands” I have been listening to these guys for years and love their covers. “Desperado” is my all time fave, with “Take it on the Run” a close second. Their drummer is fierce…

Yay, I love covers! Let’s see what you brought…

1 – Reminds me of Hayseed Dixie. First verse pretty much is all you need here. Wears a little thin by the 2:00 mark.

2 – Embarrassed to admit it took me a bit to figure out what this song was. Vocals remind of Pete Yorn singing with a clothespin on his nose. Oh, nice and short. Pretty cool, but now I want to hear Pete Yorn doing this song.

3 – Like the guitar. ‘Harmonies’ on the chorus are kinda horrible. Whoa, abrupt ending. A hard out. Just as well. Will be listing to the original within 30 seconds after finishing this.

4 – Ooh, like the vibe, like the harmonies, Okay, for some reason this song makes me drift off and think of an unmade David Lynch movie, like this would be playing in the background while some insane guy in a pig mask was dismembering his grandmother. For the juxtaposition. Cool song.

5 – Yeah, now we’re talkin’. Is this Me First & the Gimee Gimmees? Okay, that was fun. Think Dolly should have done it this way in the first place.

My .02 – Two best covers ever: 1 – Sid Vicious sings “My Way”, DEVO does “Satisfaction”. Oh, and Johnny Cash does “Hurt”, though I can’t listen to it without sobbing.
