(And, it has nothing to do with the fact that my Mother in Law is coming in from Texas tomorrow, and then there’s that little thing about launching The Music Mamas website tomorrow. That’s nothing – I ALWAYS run around ninety miles an hour with no sleep and my hair on fire. Seriously.)
Okay, so when I left you last, you were pondering the matching of the songs with the Music Mamas who chose them. Let’s see who picked what, shall we? And remember – the criteria posed to them was to pick a song that they thought most described them, or that they identified with…
Track 1: Livin’ on a Prayer – Bon Jovi
This one is Tiffani (Sound Check Mama) all the way! She is a die hard, old school, true blue Bon Jovi fan. She’s never lost the faith, and is never hesitant to claim what she likes…regardless of what anyone else things. (Which is kick ass as far as I’m concerned!) Here’s an idea about her musical taste, in her own words:
As an ’80s girl, I love big hair, big guitars and big voices. I’m old school with a little Ke$ha and Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights mixed in.
Hell yeah, y’all!
Track 2: My Baby Don’t Tolerate – Lyle Lovett (with John Hiatt, Joe Ely and Guy Clark at Austin City Limits)
Well, as many of you pointed out without hesitation and with absolute certainty – this was my choice. I really am transparent, aren’t I? Well, now you see why I wanted to start another blog with more tastes and genres represented…and The Music Mamas was born!
Anyway, I picked this for a number of reasons. (a) I adore Lyle Lovett, second only to my adoration of Townes Van Zandt. (Guy Clark is just short of adoration: more like “love him like an uncle” status.) (b) I love Texas music played by Texas boys. (See JTNL as example). (c) I love notes that are picked on a guitar, not only strummed. Add that with a bluesy groove and I’m a happy puddle of goo. John Hiatt KILLS it on this song. (d) I’m pretty demanding, and can be fairly bitchy. Matter of fact – I’m alot like the girl in this song. Just ask my husband, saint that he is… (e) I LOVE clever lyrics. Lyle’s are always intelligent and witty, and these are especially pithy and adroitly executed. Overall, it’s a damn near perfect example of “Ri”!
Track 3: I Know What I Know – Paul Simon
This one came to us via Lindsay (Rock and Roll Mama)…the Lucy to my Ethel.
Her exact words to me when she sent it over? “Hmmmm. My song shall be “I Know What I Know” by Paul Simon because I love it and it’s funny!”
That’s Lindsay – and I love that about her. Direct and clear, and always with reasons for what she does. She’s a thinker AND a doer. A super smart cookie, she knows who and what she likes, and she doesn’t hesitate to show it. Her musical tastes reflect her life – she’s got a favorite genre for every emotion or situation. (Remember the “Soundtrack to Your Life” meme? Inspired by Lindsay. ;))
(And she knows her music, yo!)
Track 4: Hip Hip Chin Chin by Club des Belugas
Melisa. (with one s, thankyouverymuch!) Melisa (Suburban Scrawl) is one of the most reliable, on the ball chicas I know. And, in true Melisa form, God love ‘er, she sent over her explanation with her song choice:
I adore this song for several reasons. It’s Latin-flavored electronica, which is always a fun combination. It’s very upbeat and joyful (so am I, mostly!), and although it’s got a steady beat, there’s a lot going on in the background. That’s me: steady as she goes, but multitasking constantly. The limited lyrics are all about the rhythm (and the beat) of life, and that’s me too: if my routine gets disrupted I’m always a little uneasy, so I like to keep things moving at a pretty consistent pace.
Track 5: Tom’s Diner – Suzanne Vega
This one was from our sweet Mishi (Secret Agent Mama). Now, as she said, she COULD have easily picked a Dave Matthews song, as her love for him is known far and wide throughout the land. But, she dug deeper and gave us this little gem which I think does describe her SO well. She’s a Professional Photographer with a great eye for capturing the beauty in the human condition. She’s an observer…so you can always count on her musical choices (and writing) to be very insightful!
Track 6: Haunted – Shane McGowan and Sinead O’Connor
Lara, Lara, Lara! (or DiPaola Momma, aka Chicken Nuggets of Wisdom). Don’t let the Italian surname fool you – this blue eyed spitfire is an Irish girl – and like ALL good Irish girls, loves her some Pogues. And music. And, obviously, very EMOTIONAL music. But, that makes sense, because Lara minces no words to tell you how it is – with flowery description, copious use of CAPITALS and punctuation for emphasis!!!! She’s a hoot most of the time and always laughing, so I was intrigued that she picked this song to “represent” her.
Then I realized. She FEELS things, and expresses those feelings. Not all writers do, or can. 😉
Now, since I came up with this idea, oh…LATE Thursday, I missed getting two of the Mamas songs in. That’s no reason for you to MISS them, though!
Track 7: It’s My Life – Talk, Talk
Okay, Aimee (Greeblemonkey) just came onboard (yay!!) so I haven’t had a chance to absorb her “music vibe” yet. But, omigod, how much do I LOVE that she chose this – and that she chose the original and not the No Doubt cover?!?!
I think we’re going to get along FAMOUSLY. This chick rocks. 😉
Track 8: Rock and Roll is King – Electric Light Orchestra
I saved Belle (This Belle Rocks) for last, because you can always count on her for a rousing, rocking good time! She’s normally our resident Death Metal – Hair Band girl, but she can also pull out the Outlaw Country and the straight out traditional when the occasion suits. She’s been around since the very beginning of my online musical blog adventure, and has rocked right along with me throughout….
And, to finish up a post introducing The Music Mamas? This one is friggin’ PERFECT! (Just like her. 😉 )
