With the multitude of media outlets out there these days, iPhone apps, social networking sites, digital billboards, etc. I’ve found the strangest places to come across some awesome indie acts. Sherlock Tones for example, I came to know about from a popular Facebook Game: Nightclub City (don’t act like you don’t play them too from time to time).
Now, I’m not very genre specific, but I hold a near and dear place in my heart for really good hip hop. These boys out of the Bay area (San Francisco for those outside of California) make some really good hip hop. According to their Facebook fanpage, they’re an “Electro Pop Hip Hop” group. Don’t worry, I am not quite sure about all the nuances of that particular genre either.
Unlike a lot of the hip hop you hear on the radio these days… you know the kind, with the booty this and the benjamins that… these guys manage to have some pretty intelligent lyrics. One standout line from their single entitled Senior Year: “Now 600 on the SAT means you ain’t getting into USC” – a song that reminisces on the final year of high school, childhood aspirations and the reality of growing up – exemplifies the “smart” hip hop aspect that makes them a refreshing act considering the current state of popular hip hop these days.
If you enjoy great beats and lyrical artistry similar to Outkast, Erykah Badhu, Kanye West, etc. you will definitely be an instant fan of Sherlock Tones. Some stand out tracks to download “Love No More” “California Girl” & “Senior Year”. Take a listen to a few samples via their YouTube album snippet (which was just uploaded last week – hot off the presses!)
