So, for those of you who aren’t familiar with The Fivers, lemme ‘splain.
No, there is too much. Let me sum up.
Go here. Then come back…because the answers are below:
Track 1: “Sail” – AWOLNation
This dude is nuts. Seriously. Go check out his site. But, evidently AWOLNation has opened for Weezer and MGMT, and by all accounts whipped the crowd into an acceptable level of music lovin’ frenzy. I’d say that in the right context and at the right time, this amalgamation of influences turned up to 11 could be awesome…but, sitting home in my jammies on a Sunday is not that time.
Track 2: “Whiskey for Breakfast” – The Real Nasty
Despite the unsavory band name and the ridiculous subject of this song …I can’t help but like this. Mari hit the nail on the head when she called it a “fun romp”, and the obvious tongue in cheekiness appeals to my sense of humor, if not decorum. Not all of the songs are this devil may care – they have an overall country rock sensibility and the percussionist uses an Afro-Cuban box drum (cajon). Yep, there’s just enough weirdness to make me want to hear more…
Track 3: “You Got What I Need” – Joshua Radin
What’s that? What do you mean, you “didn’t read” my Joshua Radin post over at The Music Mamas? If you had, you’d know that this is from his new CD “The Rock and The Tide”, released last Tuesday. You’d know that this was the first song he sang when I met him in NYC during a last.fm recording session at CBS Studios. You’d know that this is the song that totally hooked me as a fan. You’d also have seen a photo of us together. But, you didn’t read it, eh?
(I need a moment to compose myself – I’m SO disappointed in you. Pfffft!)
Track 4: “Worry About You” – 2AM Club
Well. For what it is, it’s very, very good. I mean, musically – this is fairly well layered, no? Just enough synth versus actual instrument sound…okay, so I’m stretching. But seriously – someone nailed it with the “boy band” comment, and well…I detest the boy band sound as a rule. So I’m probably not the right one to ask about this. 😉 (Which is why I share it with you here rather than as a feature! I mean – if you DO like it, then by all means, I should share it, right! Right!)
Track 5: “I Walked” – Sufjan Stevens
Ahhhh, Sufjan! You eclectic, talented, handsome little weirdo, you! This track is from his newly released “The Age of ADZ” – the first studio album he’s put out in like, five years. I’m surprised no-one commented on the ’80’s sound on this one – the synth in conjunction with his ethereal vocals? I mean, come ON. Totally ’80’s. If the late great John Hughes were still with us and making movies, I have no doubt that he’d be using Sufjan on his sountracks.
And we’d all love it.
