Track 1: Sara Barellies – (Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay

Lisa Says: Love because it’s old made new, her voice gets me warm and fuzzy enough to invoke a total girl crush and I can FEEL it.
Ri Says: Have to admit I’ve never heard much from her beyond “Love Song”…but her version of this gave me chills. Damn.

Lyrics:

Sitting in the morning sun
I’ll be sitting when the evening comes
Watching the ships roll in
And I watch ’em roll away again

[Refrain]
Sitting on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
I’m just sitting on the dock of the bay
Wasting time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the ‘Frisco bay
‘Cause I had nothin to live for
And look like nothing’s gonna come my way

So I’m just…
[Refrain]

Look like nothing’s gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can’t do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I’ll remain the same

Sittin here resting my bones
And this loneliness won’t leave me alone
It’s two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I’m just…

Track 2: Sugarland – Little Miss

Release Date: 2010 on Incredible Machine

Lisa Says: Because my daughter Erin dances and sings to the top of her lungs to every single Sugarland song she EVER hears….and I think this speaks to every woman, regardless of age.

Ri Says: Can’t go with you on this one. For some reason, Jennifer Nettles irritates the ever lovin’ shit out of me. (Not quite Helen Hunt status, but close…)

Lyrics:

Little Miss done on love,
Little Miss I give up,
Little Miss I’ll get tough, don’t you worry ’bout me anymore

Little Miss checkered dress,
Little Miss one big mess,
Little Miss I’ll take less when I always knew so much more

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright,
Yeah, sometimes ya gotta lose ’til ya win,
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright,
It’ll be alright again, it’ll be alright again

I’m okay, It’ll be alright again, I’m okay (okay) It’ll be alright again, I’m okay

Little Miss do your best,
Little Miss never rest,
Little Miss, be my guest, I’ll make more anytime it runs out

Little Miss you’ll go far,
Little Miss hide your scars,
Little Miss who you are is so much more than you like to talk about

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright,
Yeah, sometimes ya gotta lose ’til ya win,
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright,
It’ll be alright again, it’ll be alright again,
I’m okay, It’ll be alright again, I’m okay (okay) It’ll be alright again, I’m okay

Hold on, hold on, you are loved, are loved

Little Miss brand new start,
Little Miss do your part,
Little Miss big ole heart beats wide open, she’s ready now for love

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright,
Yeah, sometimes ya gotta lose ’til ya win,
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright,
It’ll be alright again, it’ll be alright again
I’m okay, It’ll be alright again, I’m okay (okay) It’ll be alright again, I’m okay,
It’ll be alright again

Track 3:Mary Chapin Carpenter – This Shirt

Release Date:1989 on State of the Heart

Lisa Says: Because I’m feeling nostalgic and I miss new music by her.
Ri Says:Pssst. Lisa. She put out a new album, Age of Miracles, in April of 2010…;) Oh, and I love her, too!

Lyrics:

This shirt is old and faded
All the color’s washed away
I’ve had it now for more damn years
Than I can count anyway
I wear it beneath my jacket
With the collar turned up high
So old I should replace it
But I’m not about to try

This shirt’s got silver buttons
And a place upon the sleeve
Where I used to set my heart up
Right there anyone could see
This shirt is the one I wore to every boring high school dance
Where the boys ignored the girls
And we all pretended to like the band

This shirt was a pillow for my head
On a train through Italy
This shirt was a blanket beneath the love
We made in Argeles
This shirt was lost for three whole days
In a town near Buffalo
‘Till I found the locker key
In a downtown Trailways bus depot

This shirt was the one I lent you
And when you gave it back
There was a rip inside the sleeve
Where you rolled your cigarettes
It was the place I put my heart
Now look at where you put a tear
I forgave your thoughtlessness
But not the boy who put it there

This shirt was the place your cat
Decided to give birth to five
And we stayed up all night watching
And we wept when the last one died
This shirt is just an old faded piece of cotton
Shining like the memories
Inside those silver buttons

This shirt is a grand old relic
With a grand old history
I wear it now for Sunday chores
Cleaning house and raking leaves
I wear it beneath my jacket
With the collar turned up high
So old I should replace it
But I’m not about to try

I hear you on Jennifer Nettles….I have a hate/kinda like/hate thing as well. Like the words, though; and they win this time for me :) Thanks for sharing my stuff, I’m gonna go listen to MCC for a bit.

Anyone who has Jeffrey Dean Morgan on their laminated list is uber cool in my book. Tell me I ‘m not the only one who rewound multiple times just to catch a few extra glimpses of his best side, umm, back side :) Stealing your stolen meme, by the way. But probably tomorrow, when I can see straight :)

Um Ri!?!? I’m I just not seeing the “players”

Like Ri, my knowledge of Sara Barellis is pretty limited… I do love that song Vegas. I bet she does a great cover of this great song!

Sugarland I’ve heard of… I don’t know that I’ve actually heard them/her… but will give it a go for sure because your daughter loves it:)

Mary Chapin Carpenter equals a very nice choice!!! and seriously, doesn’t everybody have a box full of tshirts we just can’t throw out!?

    Thanks Lisa!
and Ri… just thump me in the head if the players are there and I don’t see them… otherwise… get on it sistah!!! j/k sort of

    Thanks Ri!

Wow! Sara’s version of Dock of the bay kicks ass! The whole timing on the first verse had me almost holding my breath… what a sweet tease with the pregnant pauses. the girl’s got pipes, and I should probably buy some of her music.

Okay, I listened to Sugarland… they’re not my cup of tea, but I liked their little interview at the beginning of the clip. When they were talking about the heart being the incredible machine… my TV saturated brain from the 70’s immediately started singing School House Rock’s.. I’m a machine, you’re a machine. Everybody that you know, you know they are machines… Haha

MCC is really just so talented. I think a lot of people that ‘don’t like country’ have missed out on her greatness. She’s really more folky and her songs are so heartfelt! Nice choice. I think I’ll wear my Underdog T-shirt to bed tonight…
