National Coffee Day Poetry

So, according to more than a few friends on Facebook (which we KNOW is the final authority on EVERYTHING), today is National Coffee Day.

Well, THIS is my kind of holiday.  I’ve just cracked open a brand new case (yes, I said case) of K-cups for my beloved Keurig machine this morning, and I shall endeavor to spend the remains of the day indulging in the sweet, delicious glory of said cups.

I shall rotate flavored creamers, I shall savor aromas, I shall gleefully dunk almond biscotti and I shall most definitely relax with my feet up as I do all of the above.  I shall crank up the air conditioner to unreasonable levels for early Fall, in an effort to create the need to be enveloped in a soft blanket whilst cupping my steaming mug o’ joe lovingly.

I shall ENJOY my coffee, dammit.  Since I’ve given up smoking and snorting and have marginally reduced my alcohol consumption, the reckless and carefree enjoyment of coffee is one of my only remaining vices!  (And I tell you what, I’m clinging to that puppy like baked-on lasagna crud sticks to a metal pan.)

But, enough of that – I’m off to worship at the altar of Juan Valdez.    In honor of this most auspicious day, I give you my “Spontaneous Ode to Coffee”!

(First posted here at Music Savvy Mom on May 10, 2010)

This just came to me whilst boiling eggs, packing lunches and loading the dishwasher this morning – all while clutching my steaming, aromatic brand new Mother’s Day coffee mug.

If it stinks, don’t blame me. It’s as if it wrote itself with very little assistance from me. I mean, really – I’m only on cup number one, and it’s Monday. I did one type through with no changes, ’cause that’s just how I roll.

I’m a purist.

I’ll probably add a Playlist later, after I drop Liam at Pre-School, hit the grocery and have two more cups…

One Mom’s Spontaneous Ode to Coffee

I love the way you jack me up,
You hot, black velvet in my cup
And gird my mood for battle fair
with toys and poopy underwear.

My busy day I’m dearth to face
Until sweet coffee’s had it’s place
Upon my breakfast table where
I move the laundry piles with care.

I gently nudge the bills away,
Refuse to let work have the sway
To mar the blissful waking mood
that rich elixir doth exude.

Come sing with me of college years
Grey all-nighters, hangover tears
And all the foibles forced to flee
By coffee’s steadfast loyalty.

Ah, yes, dark friend! We owe to you
So much in life we’re wont to do
Careers, achievements, breeding too –
Without you…we’d just sleep right through!

To you, sweet beans, we give attention
To whining kids we shall not mention
The truth that’s proved each day anew…
The one I love the best is YOU!

There is nothing quite like coffee, and though I vowed that I would never use our Keurig machine, I would have to say that it has grown on me.

In terms of coffee poetry, you could always try something simple:

    Roses are red,
    Violets are blue,
    Oh blessed coffee,
    How I love you.

My daughter is the honey-phile that I am, even if she is usually a honey.
