I Don’t WANT to go on the cart!

(The following SHOULD have gone up at The Music Mamas this morning…but, apparently in the two years that I’ve shamefully let everything lie practically dormant, something there has rusted. So, rather than slow my new-found momentum, I’m sharing it with y’all. I intended a separate post here today, too, but it all comes out the same in the wash. I’M BACK, baby!)

——

Monty Python reference notwithstanding, allow me a moment of most grave sincerity to say that I have SO MISSED you people!

Ri here…the one who dropped the ball, went into a cave and left this poor site to die a slow, miserable death. What has it been…two years ago, now? I’m pretty sure we missed the entirety of 2012. If I told you that I’d been abducted by aliens in the interim, would it help?

I didn’t think so.

Let’s just say I’m back, I’m NOT ready to put this site on the cart (“Bring Out Yer Dead!”), and most of the Mamas are with me on that. You didn’t REALLY think you were going to be rid of us that easily, did you?

Now, I know it’s been a while, so here’s a refresher on the rules of the Friday Fiver:

1.) One of us posts five songs here. Totally blind – we don’t tell you who or what they are.

2.) You listen, and leave notes in the comments about each. (Be brutally honest! We may have thrown in a duffer just to see if you’re paying attention – they’re not ALL going to be winners, not even all new – just random songs to discuss.)

3.) On Sunday, we’re back with the Scoop – the big Reveal, as it were. If there were songs you loved, you go out and buy them and support the artists! Piece of cake…tasty, tasty cake.

When the urge strikes, we may have a theme, or a running similarity through the songs. Not so today. I have been so out of the music loop for so long, it’s frankly an embarrassment. So, in the interest of whimsy, I have just selected five songs from my collection at random. They actually should give you a pretty good indication my tastes. (Or the number of voices in my head…) Since all of the Mamas have vastly differing musical sensibilities, we’ll all be putting up posts soon in one form or another that remind you who we are and what to expect from us.

We’re getting reacquainted. 😉

So, here’s the mishmash that screams “RI!” If you have no idea who I am, (and trust me, after my lengthy absence, you’re definitely not alone in that), check the bio pages up top.

Now, volume up, and dive into these five:

    1. Is this from the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack? Funky. Not sure that I’ve heard it but I know for sure I’ve heard them. Makes me want to put on my go-go boots and do that dance that looks like you’re pulling vines down from the ceiling with alternating hands. I have no idea what it’s called. I know it’s not the “dougie.”

    2. Very Simon & Garfunkelish in those vocals. Way too moody for me. This is the sad music that makes me sad. Not for me. No.

    3. Ooh, this makes me happy. Turned up way loud by the time the banjo rolls in. Hand claps!? (I’m neutral on those) Steel guitar! (flove) Very much my jam. This song I cheated and used my phone to find out who it was so I could go and find more on iTunes. I want to roll around in this one for a while. The fact that it sounds so much like Steve Earle may have a way lot to do with that.

    4. Lovely voice. Too much of a hipster vibe for me. I would listen to it but not listen for it, but I can see that these lyrics would be ones that would haunt me in certain moments.

    5. Yeah this is the band that I always feel like I should like but no. I’m sorry. I don’t. No, actually, I’m not sorry–I’m just not really a fan. But I do enjoy the guitar work.

    6. laughing. coffee spewing. Laws, this one should have come with a warning sticker. Perfect. Makes me want to write a dissertation on the similarities of musical stylings of seemingly worlds-apart genres.

I love the fiver. Welcome back.

Not really a mama, but I’ll join in.

    1. Slow to start, but a good 70s beat, music theater. Got me to tap my feat as I was about to quit.

    2. Slow, not good for me today.

    3. I thought this was a Civil War ballad at first, then the rest of the instruments kicked in and I could see this as a drive in the country kind of song. Not really for me, but not bad.

    4. A fast, folksy song. Not quite for me, but not bad.

    5. REM-ish. I kind of like this one.

    6. Nice, I like the quick pace, good guitar mix. I’d grab this one.

    2. Oh… RIP sweet man… Pretty sure that is the very sad and talented, Elliot Smith.
    3. uh… no… a little too hillbilly for this girl.
    4. Oh I have this song on a Sunday morning playlist… she’s a good one.
    5. Oh my angst filled youth – you know I love this.
    6. My 9 year just yelled – “mom he just cursed” It’s like a health ed class in one song.. that was interesting.

Then we wo7n8l&#d21u;t have Colorado, Chicago or other chaos.Black men make them without marriage. White men are starting to do that as well. But white men also make them IN marriage and then leave the family and make a new family and forget about the other children from the previous marriage, two, three and four times. Yes, I am saying it. Women can’t raise boys to be men. WIthout men raising men, the next generation will have none. What is happening in the USA? Waiting for the irresponsible men to start making excuses.
