What…peas AGAIN?

I got nothin’ this week.

Tons of behind the scenes work on a new project (that I HOPE will blow your socks off) has kept me occupied. If you notice a flurry of music showing up on my Blip/Twitter feeds, that’s what I’m doing.

I HAD intended to sit down at my office Panera yesterday while Liam was in school to write a wonderfully insightful, beautifully crafted post that I was certain would inspire you, enthrall you and warm the very cockles of your collective hearts.  BUT…he stayed home with a cough and sniffles, so we made the Backyardigans out of PlayDoh instead.

Rather than leave you with nothing new today while we’re involved in high-level Health Care Conferencing doctor’s appointment and then touring the premises of a Fine Purveyor of Imported and Domestic Agricultural Combustibles grocery store run , I’m recycling a post from Vacuity way back in December.  I’m fairly certain you haven’t seen it, because nobody ever goes there anymore…including me…

Here’s what I’ve been listening to while I worked this morning.

Evidently, I’m in a British Indie-Folk mood today.

It’s left me with a lovely relaxed yet slightly quirkely angst-filled feeling, though.

Maybe I’ll go more in depth later at Music Savvy Mom, but for now…enjoy the tunes.

I’m going to take the Bugman out for lunch.

I have this strange urge for Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas.

Think I can find them in Virginia?

Yes, they did.

And yes, I do take requests. Here’s the proof.

See, just now on Twitter, HootSuite,  I saw that DiPM (that’s the rapper name I gave her) over at Chicken Nuggets of Wisdom sent me the following Tweet:

And so I give you…By Order of DiPM…the Monday Funk-Shakin’ Mix.  I’m sitting here in Panera with my headphones on, trying my best not to make a total and complete moron of myself.  I can’t stop myself from boppin’ and groovin’.  If YOU can…well, then check your blood sugar.  You may need a twinkie.

xoxo

(Yes, that was a really bad play on Shakespeare.  They can’t ALL be winners.)

Well, my day in the sun over at Today’s Mama has passed…another Mama’s playlist is up now, so I figured I’d let you see (and hear) what I sent over.

(Y’know – since I’m fairly certain that not ALL of you trucked over there to check it out.  Yeah, you know who you are.  *ahem* )
Enjoy, and since I haven’t reminded you lately:

If you love it, BUY IT.  Support the artists – I want no starving musicians on my conscience.  Swiper, no swiping!

xoxo,
Ri

“Make a playlist of love songs.”

Boy, is that a loaded request!  Which kind of love – young, new, unrequited, passionate, comfortable, crazy, enduring? They all describe the same emotion, and may all be used to accurately describe a different stage of the same life – of the same love.  (But – they don’t all necessarily belong in the same playlist…)

Now, even in my “young love” days, I was not a fan of the hearts and flowers.  As the years (all 42 of them) have passed, and love has grown into marriage and motherhood, I find that the love songs I most appreciate are the ones referencing how real – and hard – love can be.  It’s not all glamour, it’s not all fun, and it’s definitely not always exciting.  But…it’s solid.  It’s comforting.  It’s tenacious.  It’s TANGIBLE.

That’s the kind of love song that I will be listening to as Valentine’s Day 2010 approaches.  I’ll be reminding myself that neither of us is perfect, and we like it that way.  Hearing about lost love will remind me how lucky I am to have found and kept mine.  I’ll laugh when I think of how silly we were then, and how relaxed and content we are now.  And on February 14th, when we’re sitting on the sofa in our sweats instead of wining and dining on the town, I’ll slip my hand into my hubby’s and we’ll listen together…because he feels the same way I do.

Of course he does.  We’re in love. ;)

The Milkman of Human Kindness – Billy Bragg
“If you are sleeping, I will wait.  If your bed is wet, I will dry your tears. I love you.”
Boots of Spanish Leather – Bob Dylan
“I’d forsake them all for your sweet kiss, for that’s all I’m wishin’ to be ownin’.”
Never Let Go – Tom Waits
“Well, you’ll leave me hanging by the skin of my teeth, I’ve only got one leg to stand
You can send me to hell but I’ll never let go of your hand.”
Say Yes – Elliott Smith
“I’m in love with the world through the eyes of a girl who’s still around the morning after.”
Love Like the Movies – The Avett Brothers
“Now in the movies they make it look so perfect, and in the background they’re always playing the right song
And in the ending there’s always a resolution; but real life is more than just two hours long.”
A Rainy Night in Soho – The Pogues
“You’re the measure of my dreams.”
Song for You – Ray Charles
“I love you in a place where there’s no space or time; I love you for my life, ’cause you’re a friend of mine.”
In Spite of Ourselves – John Prine and Iris DeMent
“He ain’t too sharp but he gets things done; drinks his beer like it’s oxygen
He’s my baby and I’m his honey; never gonna let him go.”
Remember the Mountain Bed – Jeff Tweedy (Wilco)
“Your shape and form is dim but plain, there on our mountain bed
I see my life was brightest where you laughed and laid your head…”
Patty Griffin – When it Don’t Come Easy
“If you forget my love I’ll try to remind you and stay by you when it don’t come easy.”

Turnaround is WAY fun!

Y’all – this is SO exciting.

Y’know how much fun everyone always says it is to Guest DJ and make a playlist?  Well, they’re RIGHT!

I got to find out this weekend, when out of the clear blue I received a lovely email from Erin at Today’s Mama, asking me to participate in their two week “Valentine’s PlayMix” series. (And, notfornothing, but…they’re all professional and organized over there!  MOST impressive.  I may have even been a hair intimidated, but don’t tell anybody.) They’re asking fourteen Moms to submit ten love songs each, from now until February 14th…and guess who has the honor of going FIRST?!

(Dude.  I know.  I was as shocked as you are…)

That’s right – my ten picks are up on Today’s Mama HERE, right now, as well as my accompanying description.  I was on my best behavior of course…I kept on topic, I tried not to ramble, and I’m pretty sure I don’t even have any many sentence fragments!  Yay, me!

Do me a solid and swing by, k?  Then come back here and tell me what you really think.  I can take it. ;)

xoxo, Ri

Pssst:  I may be playing these and other “Quirky Love Songs” today on Blip.fm…just sayin’…

National Dice Day? You Bet!

Today, as you have no doubt already surmised from the title of this post, is National Dice Day. I like goofy holidays like this one and enjoy imagining how they came about.

Picture it: Dogs playing poker. The St. Bernard says…

Wait a minute. Forget that thought, on the grounds that dogs don’t talk.

On second thought, they don’t play poker either. Let’s start again.

Picture it: Dogs playing poker.

dogs-playing-poker

The St. Bernard says, “Hey, this is really fun, playing cards with you guys. I wish we could do this everyday.”

The cigar-smoking bulldog responds, “Yeah! Or it should be a holiday! How about National Card Playing Day?”

The German Shepherd, on his third beer, says, “Cards are fun, but you know what is really fun? Dice. National Dice Day: I love the sound of that. How about December 4th?”

Whether this highly imaginative version of how National Dice Day came about is true or not (she typed, with a little chuckle), doesn’t really matter, does it? What’s truly important is this:

What the heck kind of music would I listen to on National Dice Day?

Las Vegas-themed songs, of course! Grab this playlist along with your favorite Elvis impersonator, and have fun with it!

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

A Little Less Conversation (Elvis Presley): You have to start any Las Vegas playlist with Elvis Presley, for sure. This song is one of my favorites, and it’s also on the “Ocean’s Eleven” soundtrack, which gave it a rebirth of sorts a few years ago.

Waking Up in Vegas (Katy Perry): The perfect expansion on the motto “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”. This ditty, sung by the girl who kissed a girl (and liked it), is the story of a blackout the night before and all the questions that come with it in the morning. My favorite line? “Get up and shake the glitter off your clothes now.” Awesome.

Pretty Vegas (INXS): The lyrics of this song were actually conceptualized by JD Fortune, the guy on the reality show “Rock Star: INXS” in 2005, when he was trying to become the replacement for the late, great Michael Hutchence. JD was not popular with the rest of the cast; it probably had something to do with the fact that, from the very beginning of the show, he proclaimed that he was the only true INXS fan and thus the only one who deserved to win. One night, during what was supposed to be a team writing challenge, JD went out on his own and penned the chorus of this song. It later turned out well for him; the band was impressed. JD was eventually picked as Hutchence’s replacement, and “Pretty Vegas” became their first single released with JD on lead vocals.

Viva Las Vegas (Elvis Presley): Come on, need I say anything about this one? I thought not.

Danke Schoen (Wayne Newton): Wayne Newton IS “Mr. Las Vegas”. He is currently celebrating FIFTY YEARS on the Vegas strip. I was going to list the tv shows and movies in which he’s guest-starred as himself, performing in Vegas (like “Roseanne” or “Vegas Vacation”), but I went to his website to look them up and the list was just far too long. That says something in itself, don’t you think? This is one of my favorite Wayne Newton songs, and it has NOTHING to do with the fact that it is lip-synched by Matthew Broderick in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. (okay, maybe a little.)

The Gambler (Kenny Rogers): I had to go there. Because you’ve got to know when to hold ‘em AND when to fold ‘em.

Leaving Las Vegas (Sheryl Crow): This haunting song off Crow’s “Tuesday Night Music Club” is supposedly a loose interpretation of her life (when she left the Midwest for L.A.), but there was a dispute with a friend of one of her Tuesday Night Music Club members, because it was apparently about his life. I guess it could be a little like astrology: easy to read some of yourself into it if you want to. Whatev. It’s a great song.

Queen of Las Vegas (The B-52’s): For such a peppy song, this is actually about a mother who is dying and giving her child some final words of encouragement. As it is with many of the songs by the B-52’s, it’s a little weird. But I like weird. (Try “Party Out of Bounds” as an alternate!)

When You’re Smiling (Dean Martin): The member of the Rat Pack most known for his mad drinking skillz, Dean Martin’s voice is silky, and soothingly old school. The song was originally performed by Louis Armstrong, but I enjoy this version as well.

Poker Face (Lady Gaga): If any of you out there read my blog, Suburban Scrawl, you’ll know that the addition of this song to the playlist was a no-brainer as I am currently in the throes of Lady Gaga adoration. (I even dressed my dog up as Lady Gaga for Halloween. Check it out here.) I can’t say enough about how much her music makes me happy, so I won’t even try. I do want to point out some “fun” lyrics in this song though; they make me smile. She says, “I won’t tell you that I love you, kiss or hug you, cause I’m bluffin’ with my muffin. I’m not lying I’m just stunning with my love-glue-gunning.” Where else will you get lyrics like that? (Answer? Nowhere.)

Rods and Cones (Blue Man Group): Ahh yes, the cobalt kings of performance art. There’s nothing like Blue Man Group, especially from the front row while wearing a poncho. (My husband and I have seen them in Chicago five or six times. Big fans.) What do you get when you attend a Blue Man show? I can’t tell you specifically; that’s part of the fun, the surprise of it. What I can say is that you will get comedy that seems dumb yet is very, very smart. You will get silliness. And DRUMS. You will get percussion like you’ve never heard before. It’s mind-blowing. I love the power in this song.

SNL Star Wars (Bill Murray): I couldn’t do a Vegas playlist in honor of National Dice Day without searching playlist.com for this (and squealing upon my discovery). In the 1970’s, one of Bill Murray’s most popular recurring characters was Nick the Lounge Singer. There’s a Nick everywhere you look in Vegas, and if this clip teaches us nothing else, it’s that you can make ANYTHING sound a little Vegas-sleazy with a little bit of effort.
